My Robusto hard rubber ended it all for me. How many times have we discussed this topic over the last 20 years on SOTW. Every time it comes up we all act like it's the first time it has come up.

Who cares how many mouthpieces someone plays or how many mint condition Mark VIs a person has. If they can afford them, I say go for it. Heck, if I was rich I would have a warehouse full of saxophones and mouthpieces.

Bebop Special endorsed by Bob Mintzer that says to currently play one is a straight baffle, medium chamber very peculiar piece.

Bopboy has a raised floor, quite a complex shape but no step baffle. The idea behind is similar to the PPT, but coming from a different perspective. Mouthpieces are very well finished, the "marble ebonite" ones are really cute, and the brass ring too. They feel like tribute to the late Freddie Gregory. As it happens, when Mr. Roach was playing them, my perception was quite different than his. The same happened to me, and the recordings confused me further. In the recent years I mostly played Link-inspired pieces or actual metal Linksthe Bopboy took me back in a kind of more edgy sound that sometimes I really enjoy.Cannonball Adderly.

Bob Mintzer, born January 27, and a native of New Rochelle, New York is what's known as a triple threat musician. While touring with the Yellowjackets or his own quartet, or big band, Bob is busy writing music for big band, various small bands, saxophone quartets, orchestral and concert band music.

He also does workshops all over the globe, writes books on a variety of musical subjects, plays on countless recordings every year, and is summoned to be guest conductor and soloist with large and small bands all over the world.

I was not only struck by the emotional outpouring of great musical performance, but also found myself completely consumed with how the music fit together in all its glorious detail. I could spend hours sitting at a piano, trying to replicate the songs I would hear others play. I was a sophomore at the time.

I think it was then and there that I decided that music would be my calling. From that point on I went to as many live performances as I could on the budget of a year old. I received a scholarship to attend this great school for my senior year of high school. This year provided the inspiration and information that was to establish my practice and training regimen for years to come. I was studying classical clarinet, playing guitar and piano, learning how to play the saxophone and flute,learning songs and writing tunes for the little combos we would put together.

Jackie McLean had just started a jazz program at Hart, and Bob spent time with Jackie while working on a multitude of skills. I also played early music in a small group for a while. There were some crazy rhythms in much of early music that paralleled what jazz improvisers were doing as far as playing over the bar line.

It was all fantastic!

After school I would listen to jazz recordings and go and sit in with local jazz musicians. There was a pretty vibrant scene at that time around Hartford, where one core group of musicians were working 6 nights a week in different joints.

Jackie eventually pushed Bob to consider moving down to New York City and jump into the jazz community down there. Rafy does great work and between his metal, hr, and wood mpc'sthere will be something there for everyone to enjoy. I won't get into describing them here, as Rafy will do that himself on his site. He's a real artisan and craftsman, and his labor of love will bring joy to many in the saxophone world. Come on now, how many of us have thought Mintzers tone had something to do with the mouthpiece. I've got one of his metal prototype pieces, plays great! He has definitely figured it out. They make the saxophone disappear. I feel very confident with my intonation and range.Persistence does pay off however as I finally found one last week!! The Bop Boy has an almost Guardala height rollover baffle in it that then descends down into the back of the chamber of the mouthpiece.

Yes, it has some brightness and edge when pushed but much darker and fatter than I had anticipated especially when played at lower volumes. I would consider this another middle of the road type mouthpiece that straddles that line between a hard rubber Otto Link and a Guardala type concept. The Bop Boy joins these two extremes and attempts to meet somewhere in the middle. At the mark I put some more air into the piece and it gets a bit more powerful and brighter. At I put more air through it and it gets even more focused and even brighter.

It seems that at softer volumes the Bop Boy has more of a spread sound to the tone but when pushed like at it becomes more focused to my ears. The altissimo was especially easy on this mouthpiece as you can hear from the sound clip below. I really liked the balance of the dark spread sound that could get more focused and bright when pushed! If you like the sound of the clip below and the mouthpiece catches your interest then give it a try.

To my ear, there are quite a few highs and quite a few lows, but a good-sized dip in the mids. Geekyness about tone aside, you sound fantastic on this! How would you compare the Bop Boy to the Bebop Special? Also how does the Bahia compare to these two? Thanks — Jim. The Bebop Special is more spread and a bit darker although it can get brighter when you push it but not as bright as the Bop Boy. The Bahia is brighter than them all and more focused also.
